Caliper Alignment (Brake Rub Fix)

Caliper Alignment (Brake Rub Fix). Step-by-step procedure for bike maintenance — tools, time, and what to watch out for.

Difficulty ☆☆ easy
Time ~5 min
Applies to All bikes with disc brakes

Tools

  • 5mm hex

Procedure

  1. Loosen the two caliper mounting bolts

(5mm hex into the frame/fork) just enough to allow the caliper to move side-to-side. Don't fully unscrew.
  2. Squeeze the brake lever firmly and hold it

    — this centers the caliper on the rotor by pressing both pads against it equally.
  3. While still holding the lever

, tighten both caliper bolts in alternating sequence, working up to 6–8 Nm.
  4. Release the lever and spin the wheel.

  5. Listen and look:

if it rubs, identify which side. Loosen and try again — sometimes it takes 2–3 attempts.
  6. For stubborn rub:

look down through the caliper at the rotor. The rotor should be visually centered between the two pads. Sometimes you need to nudge the caliper manually before tightening.
  7. For Shimano flat-mount calipers:

the front caliper has slotted holes that limit alignment range — sometimes you need to add or remove washers between the caliper and adapter to achieve perfect alignment. ---
