Tools

  • Master link pliers
  • optionally a chain holder

Procedure

  1. Shift to the smallest cog and smallest chainring

    to relieve tension.
  2. Locate the quick link

    — the master link looks slightly different from regular links. Often a different finish or the brand name stamped on it.
  3. Position the quick link on the upper run

    of the chain, between the cassette and chainring.
  4. Place master link pliers

    with the tips into the two outer holes of the link.
  5. Squeeze the pliers firmly.

    The link will pop apart.
  6. Pull the chain free.

    > If you don't have master link pliers, you can use two regular pliers — grip each side of the link and squeeze inward. It's awkward but works. ---
