Freehub Body Service (Generic)
Freehub Body Service (Generic). Step-by-step procedure for bike maintenance — tools, time, and what to watch out for.
Tools
- Standard workshop tools
Procedure
-
Remove the wheel and the rear axle/end caps.
-
Pull the freehub body off
the hub. On many hubs (Shimano standard), the freehub is held by a 10mm hex bolt at the center of the freehub. On DT Swiss Star Ratchet, it pulls off by hand (with the inner ratchet rings staying or coming with it). -
Inspect the ratchet mechanism:
- **Pawl-based** (most hubs): inspect pawls for wear or stuck springs. Clean with degreaser, dry, lightly grease the pawl pivots and apply lightweight grease (NOT heavy grease, which can prevent pawl engagement in cold weather). - **Star Ratchet (DT Swiss):** clean both ratchet rings and apply DT Special Grease. Do NOT use regular bearing grease — too thick for ratchet engagement. -
Reassemble.
Some pawl-based freehubs require careful pawl alignment during reinstallation — pawls must be compressed to slip into the body. -
Reinstall axle and wheel.
