How the Drais estimate works
- Inner surface
- The tyre is modelled as a torus: the inner surface grows with both the wheel’s bead-seat diameter and the tyre width. Wider tyres need more sealant to coat the casing and still leave liquid for punctures.
- Base fill and rounding
- A fixed base fill per square decimetre of inner surface, calibrated to land mid-chart of the published brand figures. Amounts are rounded to practical pours, with a sensible minimum.
- Adjustments
- Supple casings +10% (extra-light casings absorb more, as Silca notes), reinforced casings −5%, hot & dry climates +15% (Silca suggests starting with more), thorn country +25% (matching the brands’ published “add extra for increased protection” guidance).
- Tyre inserts
- +10% with an insert. This one is a Drais heuristic: no manufacturer publishes insert guidance.
- The four amounts
- Initial fill coats a fresh setup. Top-up is half a fill, for routine maintenance. Carry is one full refill for the trail. Buy multiplies the fill by your wheels and adds spare refills.
- Estimate vs brand figures
- The Drais estimate is volume-based maths and is labelled as such. The brand figures below are the manufacturers’ own published charts, shown for comparison — they never change the estimate.
Tubeless sealant questions
How often do I need to top up my sealant?
This depends on your climate and the brand. Sealant generally dries out over a few months; hot, dry climates speed this up. Each brand’s refresh guidance is shown in the comparison table.
Can I mix different brands of sealant?
No. Different sealants use different chemical bases (latex vs non-latex). Mixing them can cause the sealant to coagulate into a solid lump, rendering it useless.
Is the Drais estimate what the brands recommend?
Not exactly. The Drais estimate is calculated from your tyre’s inner surface and your riding conditions. The brand figures are the manufacturers’ own published amounts for your tyre size, shown beside it so you can compare.
